American Rye Whiskey must be distilled from a mash of at least 51 percent rye.
Similar to Kentucky Straight, the distilled spirit cannot excede 80% ABV and it cannot be transferred in to the barrels if it is over 62.5% ABV.
Rye Whiskey that has been aged for over two years can be further classified as Straight Rye Whiskey.
Rye Whiskey tends to be less sweet than Bourbon and offers a spicy and fruity palate.
