The largest region in terms of area and formerly the largest in terms of distilleries (before the formation of the Speyside region within it), is the Highlands. Although the worldwide allure of the rich and sweet Speyside whiskies deems them arguable the most renowned, the Highland region can boast the most traditional and authentic flavours of Scotch Whisky. Glenturret (Scotland's Oldest Distillery) is located here.
The Highland region is the land which lies to the north of the Highland line and includes distilleries as far apart as Inchmurrin in Dumbartonshire, Oban in Argyll, Pulteney in Wick and Glencadam in Brechin. As might be expected across such a wide area, generalisations become less valid and sub-division becomes more necessary.
Geographical divisions of north, south, east and west, together with the Islands can be useful in illustrating particular characteristics.
