Domestically, 90% of what is called "whisky" in India would not qualify as whisky in the EU, it would more than likely be classified as a rum. There is neither an official definition or set of regulations in place with regard to whisky in India which explains the above. The "whisky" produced there tends to be blends made of neutral spirits produced from fermented molasses and then mixed with a small proportion of malt whisky.
However there are now two Single Malt producing distilleries in India and they are gaining worldwide acknowledgement, especially Amrut.
